Women's squash overwhelms NYU, 8-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's squash team took down visiting New York University, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center Squash Courts.

The 35th-ranked Fords (3-9) claimed eight three-game victories to beat the Violets (0-7) for the second time this season. Registering a 6-3 victory over NYU on Nov. 10 at a neutral site, Haverford improved upon that effort in the comfortable confines of the GIAC on Saturday.

Playing at No. 4, Alisa Strayer led the Fords' effort by surrending just eight points in her 11-4, 11-3, 11-1 win over Elizabeth Jolley. Equally impressive was Alex Love, at No. 3, with an 11-6, 11-2, 11-5 victory against Michelle Yagnatovsky.

Caroline Nightingale, playing at No. 1, pushed Susan Lin to the limit before falling 3-2 (11-8, 8-11, 2-11, 14-12, 11-8).

In the first match of the day, the Fords fell 9-0 to 14th-ranked Franklin & Marshall College (10-7).

The Diplomats registered straight-game victories at each spot on the ladder despite Haverford's best efforts. Playing well in defeat was Strayer, who made Elizabeth Gatling work hard throughout their match at No. 4 (11-8, 11-2, 11-5). Bethany Simmonds, at No. 2, also displayed a nice effort as she suffered a tight loss, 11-9, in game one.

The Fords return to action on Wednesday night when they host Drexel University at 6:30 p.m. at the GIAC Squash Courts.
