Season Preview: Women's Squash Seeks Improvement in 2015-16

CSA Season Preview

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's squash team returns seven members from the 2014-15 squad that set a new program record with 10 victories and made the jump to the Epps Cup at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

Last season, the Fords ended the month of November with a four-match winning streak (Nov. 15-22) highlighted by two sweeps. Haverford went on to end the season with four victories in its last five matches including a 7-2 triumph over the No. 35 Bucknell Bison that gave the team its 10th win of the year.

Senior Bethany Simmonds and Alex Love '15 led the squad with 12 victories in 2014-15, finishing two of the single-season record. The team had three other players with at least 10 wins and three others with nine victories. Samara Flug '15 was named the Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week (Nov. 19) and the Philadelphia Inquirer's At-Large Academic All-Area Team (Apr. 22). Love, Simmonds and sophomore Isabelle Gotuaco wrapped up the season by participating in the CSA Individual Championships.

Gotuaco registered eight wins for the Fords at the No. 1 ladder position and scored a victory at the CSA Individual Championships. Simmonds already ranks in the top-ten in career wins (20) and winning percentage (.526) and will see a majority of her time at the No. 2 spot. Junior Isabel Agnew secured 10 wins, but will miss the first semester because she's studying abroad. Sophomore Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow tallied seven victories and senior captain Emily Berlin was a CSA Scholar Athlete. Senior Sarah Madigan did not play last season because of she was studying abroad, but has 13 career wins under her belt.

Other players that will look to help head coach Niki Clement's team include Emilia Cobbs, Sabina Aliev and Ava Lichauco. Coach Clement also has new members such as Atalanta Henderson, Olivia Franco and Natalie Jortner that are eyeing playing time.

Haverford will get its season underway this weekend with matches at Navy (2 p.m.) and Johns Hopkins (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
