Women's Squash Picks Up Win over Smith, 9-0

NORTHHAMPTON, Mass. - The Haverford College women's squash split their two matches during day two of the Pioneer Valley Invitational on the campus of Smith College. In the first match of the day, the William Smith Herons registered a 7-2 victory over the Fords. In its second match, head coach Niki Clement's team swept Smith College, 9-0.

Junior Isabel Agnew scored the first point for Haverford, tallying a 3-0 sweep at the No. 4 position. Agnew scrapped out a close 12-10 victory in game one and then won back-to-back 11-8 decisions. In her conquest, the junior traded points, but was able to find good length which opened up opportunities to attack her competitor.

Sophomore Isabelle Gotuaco won her second match of the season at the No. 1 position. Tied at one, Gotuaco took down Michaelann Denton in two straight to win in four games.

Seniors Bethany Simmonds and Sarah Madigan rallied to tie their matches at one, but ultimately lost in four games.

Haverford 9, Smith College 0

The Fords did not drop a game in their 9-0 sweep over the host Smith College. Sophomore Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow lost just three points in game three to get the scoring started. Madigan and senior Emily Berlin continued with victories. Berlin gave up four points in her contest. After Simmonds nabbed a win, junior Emilia Cobbs clinched the match for Haverford at the No. 9 position.

Agnew picked up her second win of the day and third since returning from abroad at the No. 4 ladder spot. Gotuaco and senior Sabina Aliev were also victorious. Junior Atalanta Henderson and sophomore Olivia Franco secured 2-0 triumphs in the two exhibition matches.

With the split, Haverford's record is now 2-7 on the season. The Fords continue their weekend trip up north with a match vs. Mt. Holyoke tomorrow (Jan. 17). The match is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
