Women's Squash Wins Chaffee Award

Women's Squash Wins Chaffee Award

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- It was announced earlier today by the College Squash Association (CSA) that the Haverford College women's squash team and head coach Niki Clement have been recognized as the winners of the Clarence C. Chaffee Award for the 2015-16 season.

The Chaffee Award is given annually to a women's squash coach whose team has demonstrated the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork, character, and improvement. The award is voted on by teams and presented at the National Team Championship. In 1987, the women's squash team at Williams College donated this award in honor of their former coach, Clarence C. Chaffee. Chaffee began Williams's squash program in 1938, coached the school's first intercollegiate team in 1939, and led the program until his retirement in 1970. The award was named in his honor and has been presented every year since 1987.

This marks the second time in Haverford's history that the school has recieved the Chaffee Award as the 2003 team was also granted the accolade, presented to current Haverford men's tennis coach Sean Sloane. The men's squash equivalent of the Chaffee Award, the Sloane Award, is named after coach Sean Sloane. The Haverford men's team was a finalist for the Sloane Award this year.

Clement's 2012-13 men's team was the recipient of the Barnaby Award, given to the men's team the displayed the most improvement from one season to the next.

This season, the women's squash team finished with six wins, including four of its last five matches during the regular season. The team also participated in the CSA Team Championship Tournament. Sophomore Isabelle Gotuaco led the team in wins with 11, including five victories out of the No. 1 position.

Clement, who just completed her sixth season with Haverford, also coached the men's team to nine wins this year.
