Women's Squash Foiled by Tufts

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.  – The Haverford College women's squash team was defeated in its first round match of the Epps Cup by the Tufts University Jumbos 7-2 at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships on the campus of Harvard University on Friday afternoon.

Senior Avery Weisel recorded a thrilling comeback in winning the final three games at the No. 9 ladder position to tally one of the points for Haverford. The senior dropped game one (11-5) and a tough battle in game two (11-9). Weisel won game three by an impressive margin (11-5) before taking home games four (11-9) and game five (11-9). In the decisive fifth game, the senior won the final five points to complete the exciting come from behind victory. Weisel has now won her last five matches and eight of her last 10. She has nine wins on the season and is a perfect 4-0 at the No. 9 position.  

After being defeated in game two to square the match at one, freshman Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow rallied to pick up victories in games three and four by an identical 11-7 score.

The Jumbos won at the No. 1-7 ladder positions to take the match. Freshman Isabelle Gotuaco lost a close 11-9 contest in game one before losing in three. After going down in the first two games, junior Bethany Simmonds suffered a tight loss in game three (11-9).

Head coach Niki Clement's squad fell to 10-6 on the season. The Fords will now battle Johns Hopkins in the consolation portion of the Epps Cup on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
