Baseball splits with Saints to open season

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team opened the 2010 season splitting a doubleheader with St. Lawrence University Sunday afternoon. Haverford took Game 1, 7-0, behind the complete game effort of Stefan Pappius-Lefebvre and lost Game 2, 5-4.

Pappius-Lefebvre (1-0) opened up the team's Spring Break Trip tossing a one-hitter in his season debut, striking out five while walking none. Dating back to last season, the senior right-hander has now thrown five consecutive complete games.

At the plate, Haverford (1-1) was led by Jeff Butera who went 3-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Jeremy Zoll belted two doubles, drove in a run and scored two runs. Bobby Bailey brought home two runs with a double of his own.

In the nightcap the Fords scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead, but St. Lawrence (2-1) tied the score with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Starter Brian Henrick tossed 5.1 innings, surrendering just two earned runs. Jonny Williams relieved Henrick, getting the final two outs of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh Kevin Goff came on in relief for the Fords and struck out the first batter he faced then hit Pat Considine. Garrett Fitzgerald laid down a bunt which Goff threw into right field. Considine went all the way from first to home, just beating the throw from right field with a head first slide to score the winning run.

Haverford takes on Elms (Mass.) College Monday morning at 10 a.m. in a single nine inning game.
