Office of Academic Resources (OAR)
Athletics collabarates with the OAR (Office of Academic Resources) to ensure our student-athletes are aware of all the academic support services available through the OAR. Student-Athletes meet with the OAR staff by class or by team. Depending on the option selected/offered, below is the scheduled content.
Presentation to Teams
- Meet incoming first year athletes and connect with returning athletes
- Introduce athletes to OAR staff
- Share the variety of services the OAR provides
- Present information on usage, access, services and programming via a fun, interactive competition
- Provide space for peers to share questions, challenges and advice for managing their time at Haverford.
- The OAR staff discuss pro-tips for time management strategies and how to follow-up with the office, either 1-1 academic coaching or group workshops.
Presentations to Student-Athletes by Class Year
First Year Goals and Content
- Introduce the array of services the OAR offers to all students
- Learn the time management components of planning, action and reflection
- Identify the inherent challenges in finding work-life balance in college
- Learn proven methods and strategies for organizing your time, such as utilizing semester calendars, Google calendar, and/or other systems to keep on track of daily assignments and goals
- Discuss how to prioritize and organize tasks via various to-do list methods and how to apply strategies to competing priorities and commitments
- Introduce the benefits of reflection in the process of managing your time
Sophomore and Juniors - Goals and Content
- Introduce the array of resources offered by the OAR to all students, particularly academic coaching sessions, peer tutoring, and supplemental instruction
- Learn concrete strategies for maximizing focus and reducing distractions while studying
- Understand the perks and pitfalls of utilizing technology while studying
- Learn strategies for maximizing energy levels for a range of student activities and commitments
- Maximize benefits of athletic practice and participation as a student-athlete
- Enhance time management strategies as a student engaged in upper-level classes and with increased leadership responsibilities
Seniors - Goals and Content
- Share Writing Center and OAR initiatives designed specifically for senior thesis writers, such as the “Write Here, Write Now” writing space, writing partners for sustained writing feedback, and the Speaking Initiative, for help orally articulating ideas in progress
- Learn how to manage and interpret feedback from advisors during the thesis process
- Receive support with graduate statements of purpose, job and fellowship applications, and test preparation
- Consider long-term project management strategies as students balance the capstone, coursework, and post-graduate opportunities
- Solicit input on the material resources and space accommodations that would help propel seniors as they navigate new challenges and opportunities
