Fords win conference opener over Bears

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. –The Haverford College baseball team never trailed in an 11-3 Centennial Conference victory over host Ursinus College Wednesday afternoon in the league-opener for both schools.

A 4-0 Haverford (8-5, 1-0 CC) lead shrunk to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Fords pounded out six runs in the next half-inning to again put some distance between themselves and the Bears (7-6, 0-1 CC).

Jeff Butera's one-out triple to left field brought in Charlie Carluccio and Louis DeRosa to get the top of the seventh rolling.

Jeremy Zoll followed with a single to center that allowed Butera to travel the final 90 feet, then Zoll and Mike Galetta, who had reached on Ursinus' second error of the inning, came around to score on Alex Hudak's single to left.

After stealing second, Hudak was able to score the inning's final Haverford run when Jake Chaplin singled to a busy left field.

Starting pitcher Dan Hochberg (1-1) sailed through the first five innings for Haverford before hitting a rough patch in the sixth. He earned the win, though, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Jonny Williams came on for Hochberg in the sixth, shut down the Ursinus threat, and surrendered one lonely single to the remaining batters he faced over the seventh and eighth innings. Dan Feller stepped to the mound to start the ninth and finished off the victory striking out the final two Bears batters of the game.

Ursinus starter A.J. Wright (1-1) took the loss giving up 10 runs, four of which were unearned, in six and one-third innings of work.

Zoll had three hits and an RBI and scored three times for the Fords. Hudak also had a three-hit outing and tallied three RBI, scoring twice.

DeRosa, Butera and Chaplin each added two hits in Haverford's 14-hit attack.

The same two teams will square off Friday afternoon on the Class of '16 Field at Haverford. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
