Three-run eighth gives F&M 8-6 win over baseball

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team fell to Franklin & Marshall College, 8-6, in a Centennial Conference match-up at Class of '16 Field Wednesday afternoon.

F&M (12-14-1, 7-6 CC) designated hitter Blue Wells jacked a two-run homer in the second to give the Diplomats the early lead. The Diplomats scored two more runs in the inning on an RBI single from shortstop Matt Will.

Haverford (18-10, 9-4 CC) quickly began to chip away at F&M's lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the second. Shortstop Charlie Carluccio and third baseman Mike Galetta each recorded RBI singles in the fifth inning to bring the Fords within two.

Designated hitter Chase Kennedy started off the bottom of the sixth inning with a leadoff walk. Left fielder Jake Kaden singled to right to put runners on first and third for right fielder Bobby Bailey. Bailey came through for the Fords collecting his second RBI single of the game. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from second baseman Louis DeRosa, Kaden scored on a sacrifice fly from first baseman Jake Chaplin to tie the score at 5-5.

Two RBI singles and an error allowed F&M to score three runs in the eighth inning. First baseman J.T. Triantos' RBI single to left brought home the go-ahead run.

Starting pitcher Dan Hochberg lasted only 2.1 innings for Haverford, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and one walk. Reliever Mike Bozzi then threw 4.1 strong innings for the Fords surrendering one earned run on four hits and one walk. Jonny Williams (4-2) took the loss for Haverford giving up three runs—one earned–on two hits and two walks in 1.0 inning of work. Adam Lewis threw 1.1 scoreless innings for the Fords in the loss.

F&M starting pitcher Matt Valente threw five innings, surrendering five runs—three earned—on eight hits and three walks. Reliever Mike Ham (1-0) did not give up a hit in four innings to earn the win. He allowed one unearned run on three walks.

Bailey and center fielder Jeff Butera had multi-hit games. Bailey led Haverford's offense, finishing the day 2-for-4 with two RBI. Chaplin, Carluccio and Galetta also collected RBI for the Fords.

The Fords have a chance to redeem themselves as they travel to Franklin & Marshall Friday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
