Fords terrorize McDaniel in baseball twin bill sweep

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team picked up two wins, 6-1 and 19-6, against visiting McDaniel College Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action at Class of '16 Field.

Haverford (14-8, 6-2 CC) defeated McDaniel (5-11, 1-7 CC) in the opener behind the starting pitcher of Jonny Williams (3-1) who threw a complete game for the Fords giving up just one earned run on three hits and three walks while fanning four.

McDaniel scored the first run of the day in the third inning. Center fielder Brandon Kline led off the inning with a double into deep left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly. Haverford center fielder Jeff Butera made a great catch at the wall on the Green Terrors' next batter but had no chance to stop Kline from scoring from third.

Left fielder Jake Kaden was outstanding for Haverford going 2-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored. In the fourth inning he showed his speed scoring from second on a grounder to the right side that McDaniel picked up a force out at second but weren't able to make the throw home in time to catch Kaden whose run tied the score at 1-1.

In the fifth inning second baseman Louis DeRosa executed a suicide squeeze to allow shortstop Charlie Carluccio to score Haverford's third run of the game. Later in the inning with runners on first and second, center fielder Jeff Butera hit a high fly ball into shallow center. Although three members of the Green Terror converged on the ball, it dropped allowing two more runs to score.

Haverford's offense exploded in Game 2 with a 23-hit attack.

McDaniel took the early lead scoring a run in the first inning. A single and back-to-back bunts put runners on second and third and only one out for the Green Terror. Left-fielder Russell Coover hit a ground ball to short and Carluccio got the sure out at third allowing a run to score.

Haverford's bats came alive in the bottom of the first and stayed active throughout the game.

With runners on second and third in the bottom half of the opening frame, third baseman Mike Galetta crushed a no-doubt three-run home run over the fence in right. Two walks and a single then loaded the bases for right-fielder Bobby Bailey who singled through the left side knocking in two runs for Haverford to give the Fords a commanding 5-1 lead after one inning.

Colin Sarafin (4-0) pitched six solid innings for the Fords allowing four earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four. Haverford relievers Mike Bozzi and co-captain Adam Lewis each threw one shutout inning in the nightcap win.

Eight Fords had multi-hit games on the day led by Galetta's four hits, four RBIs and three runs. Right-fielder Bobby Bailey led the team with four RBIs in Game 2. Designated hitter Alex Hudak hit his first collegiate homer and tallied three RBIs and three runs in also in the second game. Galetta and Carluccio knocked in three runs for the Fords.

Haverford is currently on a three-game winning streak. The Fords return to action Tuesday with a home game against Swarthmore College. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
