Fords’ bats held quiet by Muhlenberg in 3-2 loss

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team suffered a tough 3-2 loss to visiting Muhlenberg College Wednesday afternoon.

Haverford (11-8, 3-2 CC) starting pitcher Dan Hochberg (1-2) threw 6.1 solid innings giving up just three earned runs on six hits and three walks, but the Fords were not able to offer him much run support. Second baseman Louis DeRosa and right fielder Bobby Bailey collected all of Haverford's four hits each going 2-for-4. DeRosa also walked once.

Muhlenberg (10-9, 4-1 CC) starting pitcher Mike Speroni (2-0) stunned the Fords collecting six strikeouts in the first two innings of the game. Haverford's luck began to change in the third inning when left fielder Jake Kaden reached first on a dropped third strike. DeRosa then singled for the Fords' first hit of the game. First baseman Jake Chaplin walked to load the bases. Carluccio was then hit by a pitch knocking in Haverford's lone run of the inning.

Designated hitter Joseph DiCecilia hit a solo home run in the second inning to put Muhlenberg on the board. The following inning DiCecilia notched his second RBI of the game with a double to center. Prior to DiCecelia's RBI double, Eric Pomroy brought home the first run of the frame on a sacrifice fly to right

In the fifth Kaden led off the inning with a walk. He stole second and quickly advanced to third on a past ball. Bailey singled to left, giving Kaden plenty of time to score his second run of the day.

Haverford reliever Jonny Williams threw 2.2 perfect innings in the loss. Reliever Jason Daniels (1) earned the save for Muhlenberg throwing three perfect innings.

The Fords return to action Friday at Muhlenberg. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
