Baseball blitzes Garnet, 12-4

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team defeated Centennial Conference rival Swarthmore College 12-4 at Class of '16 Field Tuesday afternoon.

Haverford (15-8, 7-2 CC) scored eight runs in the first inning and Swarthmore (12-11, 4-5 CC) could not recover from the large deficit. The Fords pounded out 13 hits in the game and added to their lead with a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

Eleven Fords came to the plate in the monster first inning. With no outs and a 2-0 lead, designated hitter Alex Hudak stepped to the plate and hit a hard ground ball up the middle to knock in two runs for the Fords. Shortstop Charlie Carluccio then tripled to send Hudak home. Third baseman Jeff Rickert, second baseman Louis DeRosa and first baseman Jake Chaplin each hit RBI singles to plate Haverford's final three runs of the inning.

Dan Hochberg (2-2) pitched seven quality innings to earn the win. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits and did not walk a batter while striking out three. Hochberg retired the first batter of the inning five times and finished strong, retiring the last nine batters he faced in order.

Kyle Crawford (1-3) suffered the loss for the Garnet, giving up nine runs five of which were earned in 2.0-plus innings. Swarthmore reliever James Bernard threw two shutout innings in the loss allowing just two walks and no hits.

Six Fords had multi-hit games and every Haverford starter had at least one RBI or run scored in the contest. Carluccio led Haverford's offense going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

The victory gives Haverford half-a-point in the 2010 Hood Cup standings and the first points of the spring season.

Right fielder Jimmy Gill and center fielder Ben Schneiderman each collected two hits for the Garnet. Schneiderman also robbed the Fords of a few hits making some impressive plays in center.

Haverford travels to Camden, N. J. Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference game against Rutgers-Camden. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Campbell's Field.
