Baseball takes split with Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Haverford College baseball team earned a split of its Centennial Conference doubleheader with host Washington College Saturday afternoon. The Fords took Game 1, 11-6, and dropped the nightcap, 7-1.

In Game 1, Haverford (10-6, 3-1 CC) pushed eight runs across the plate in the third to build a comfortable lead. The Fords took advantage of three Washington (8-5, 3-1 CC) errors in the frame.

Chase Kennedy, who doubled, scored on a Shoremen miscue of a sacrifice bunt by Jake Chaplin. Louis DeRosa reached on an error and Charlie Carluccio tripled to right center, bringing home Chaplin and DeRosa. After Jake Kaden walked and stole second, Jeff Butera doubled down the left field line to clear the bases. That spelled the end of the day for starter Sean Connole (0-1).

Reliever Joe Kearney-Argow walked Jeremy Zoll, but retired the next two batters. The second out produced a run as Butera scored on Bobby Bailey's ground out. Kennedy, stepping to the plate for the second time in the frame, hit his second double of the inning which brought home Zoll. Chaplin followed with a double to left that allowed Kennedy to score for the second time in the inning.

The Fords tacked on three more in the seventh when Mike Galetta hit a three-run homer to center with no outs.

Meanwhile, Jonny Williams (2-1) held Washington to three runs through the first six innings. After retiring the first batter in the seventh, Williams ran into some trouble by allowing three runs on one walk and three hits. Carluccio came in to record the final two outs for the victory.

In Game 2, Washington took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Ben Jardot scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Shane Mattingly. Haverford tied the score in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Butera that plated Carluccio.

The Shoremen scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Chris Keiper scored on a throwing error to put WC up 2-1. Jardot singled through the left side to bring in Connoleto make it 3-1. The inning was capped by an RBI single by Cotterell through the left side that drove in Ryan Normoyle to give the Shoremen a three-run edge.

Washington extended the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Normoyle launched a home run over the right field wall with two outs to make it 7-1 and provide the final margin.

Bryan Henrick (1-1) was tagged with the loss, despite giving up just one earned run in 5.0 innings. Adam Lewis tossed the final 3.0 innings, allowing three runs while striking out two.

Kyle Aldrich (1-0) held Haverford to one run on five hits in 6.1 innings for the victory. Two relievers combined to hold HC scoreless for the final 2.2 innings.
