Knights best baseball, 10-9, in rain-shortened contest

ASTON, Pa. – A day after falling in extra innings, the Haverford College baseball team lost to host Neumann University, 10-9, in a rain-shortened seven innings Wednesday afternoon at Bruder Field.

Haverford (21-12) trailed, 8-0, after three innings, but battled back to take a 9-8 lead in the sixth only to see the Knights score twice in the bottom of the inning and take the lead before the game was called.

Neumann (13-13) scored six runs in the first off Fords' starter Doug Edelman. Jonny black came on to finish the first and tossed 4.0 innings in all, allowing just two earned runs.

Jeff Butera got Haverford on the board in the fourth, blasting a three-run home-run to left. The Fords added another run in the fifth as Jeff Rickert led off the frame with first career home run.

Starter Scott Hammell exited after 5.0 innings and gave way to Joe Slater. Haverford greeted the Knights new pitcher by touching him up for four runs in 0.1 of an inning. With two on and one out, Bobby Hubley doubled in two runs. The next batter, Gabe Stutman beat out an infield single and Hubley advanced to third. Stutman then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position.

Art Wharton relieved Slater and walked the only two batters he faced to force in a run. George Hatton took over on the mound for Wharton and Matt Liscovitz's ground ball to first was mishandled and allowed Stutman and Rickert to score and give the Fords the lead.

Dan Feller (0-1) started off the bottom of the sixth by retiring the first two batters, but a single by Matt Grossi followed by a homer from Gary Mitchell put the Knights back on top, 10-9.

Pinch-hitter Jake Chaplin belted a double to lead off the seventh, but was stranded.

Hatton (1-2) picked up the win in his inning of work. Erik Klimoff worked the seventh to pick up his third save of the season.

The Fords finish up Centennial Conference regular season play Saturday with a doubleheader at No. 1 Johns Hopkins University. Game 1 is slated for 12:30 p.m.
