Baseball hangs on for 10-9 victory at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – After a wild start, the Haverford College baseball team held on for a 10-9 win Wednesday afternoon against Rutgers University-Camden at Campbell's Field. At least one run was scored in all but one inning and the Fords pulled away with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings while holding Rutgers-Camden scoreless for three of the final four frames.

Matt Liscovitz led the offensive attack for Haverford (16-8), going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Charlie Carluccio, Alex Hudak, Jake Kaden and Jeff Rickert all collected two hits. As a team the Fords grinded out 14 hits. Hudak drove in a pair of runs with a double and a triple while Carluccio and Rickert both scored twice.

Rutgers-Camden (11-7) tallied 19 hits on the day. The top two batters in the order, Tom Clarke and Jon Hydock both went 4-for-6 and combined to drive in five runs. Kyle Ballay collected three hits, two RBI and scored a run.

The Scarlet Raptors got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Fords came back with two in the second. Carluccio led off with a double, then stole second. Liscovitz singled to left to bring home Carluccio. Later in the inning Louis DeRosa was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run and give HC the lead.

In the bottom of the third, Rutgers-Camden countered as Ballay belted a one-out double that scored two runs.

Liscovitz tied the score at 3-3 as he led off the fourth with his first collegiate homer. The Fords briefly took the lead later in the inning on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kaden.

In the bottom half of the inning an RBI single by Hydock tied the score again. The Fords kept their bats going in the top of the fifth and this time they took the lead for good.

With two on and no outs Liscovitz picked up his third hit of the day with a run-scoring single to left. Haverford plated its second run of the frame on a sacrifice bunt attempt. With runners on first and second, Gabe Stutman's bunt towards first basemen Robert Miranda looked like a dead out at third, but his throw trickled towards left field allowing Bobby Hubley to come home.

The Fords added single runs in the sixth and eighth and two in the ninth which proved to be crucial as Rutgers-Camden plated four runs in the ninth and had the tying run on second when the game ended.

Starter Ben Regan lasted 4.0 innings and gave up four earned runs. Jonny Black followed Regan, getting two outs in the fifth and giving up a run. Adam Lewis (1-0) stopped the Scarlet Raptors offense, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season. Dan Feller was tagged for four runs in the ninth. Jonny Williams came on to get the final out of the inning for his first save of the season.

Rutgers-Camden reliever Michael Hand (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs in 4.0 innings.

The victory marks Haverford's first over the Scarlet Raptors since 2004, breaking a string of four consecutive losses.

The Fords remain on the road Friday when they travel to Swarthmore College for a 3:30 p.m. start.
