Late inning rally gives baseball 5-4 win at F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team pulled out a come-from-behind 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon at host Franklin & Marshall College. The Fords trailed 4-0 heading into the sixth but plated five runs over the next three innings.

After scoring two runs in the sixth, Haverford (21-10, 12-4 CC) tied the score with two more runs in the seventh, then Jeff Butera's RBI single in the eighth scored Louis DeRosa with the go-ahead run.

Franklin & Marshall (12-17, 7-9 CC) established its lead with a first inning single from Billy Murray that brought in two runs. Connor Devlin delivered another RBI single for the Diplomats in the second. F&M tacked on another run in the fifth which also ended starter Bryan Henrick's day.

Ben Regan (2-0) relieved Henrick and went on to limit the Diplomats to three hits in 4.0 scoreless which gave the Fords a chance to comeback.

Haverford started its rally in the sixth as Bobby Bailey drew a bases loaded walk which forced in Butera. That walked spelled the end of the day for Eric Herbst. Josh Gray came on to strike out Charlie Carluccio for the second out, but walked Jake Kaden to force in another run.

With runners on the corners and one out in the seventh, Jeremy Zoll singled off new reliever Collin McCune (0-1) to score Jake Chaplin. Chase Kennedy followed with a single up the middle that brought home Mike Galetta with the tying run.

DeRosa struck out to start the eighth, but reached first due to a wild pitch on the third strike. DeRosa promptly stole second and moved over to third on a ground out by Chaplin. Butera drove in DeRosa to complete the Fords' comeback from a four-run deficit.

Regan retired the side in order in the eighth and the first batter he faced in the ninth before Drew Atkins singled and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Regan walked the next batter he faced then gave way to Carluccio who retired the next two batters to nail down his fifth save of the season and second in as many days.

Kennedy went 3-for-5 and drove in a run on the day. DeRosa, Butera, Zoll and Kaden all collected two hits each.

The Fords take a break from Centennial action this week with a pair of non-conference games. The first contest will be against Rowan University Tuesday at Class of '16 Field starting at 3:30 p.m.
