Baseball fights back but falls to Rowan, 10-8, in extras

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team fell to Rowan University, 10-8, in 10 innings in a non-conference contest at Class of '16 Field Tuesday afternoon.

Haverford (21-11) trailed 6-1, but scored five runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the score. Heading into the bottom of the ninth the Fords had one more comeback in them, plating two runs to tie the score and send the game to extra innings.

The Fords pulled within two on Bobby Bailey's three run home run to left center in the third. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Haverford designated hitter Jeff Butera hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score left fielder Jake Kaden. Third baseman Mike Galetta then followed with an RBI single to plate Louis DeRosa and tie the score at 6-6.

Rowan (18-10) reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning. With one out and runners on second and third, shortstop Marc Magliaro singled to knock in two runs. The Profs kept their two-run lead until the bottom of the ninth inning.

Down to its last two outs, Haverford sent catcher Jeremy Zoll to the plate. Zoll delivered with an RBI double to score Butera. Shortstop Charlie Carluccio then hit a sacrifice fly to center field allowing Galetta, representing the tying run, to score.

Rowan scored two runs in the 10th inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Matt Citro and Brandon Winkler, which would ultimately be enough to defeat the Fords.

Haverford starting pitcher Dan Hochberg lasted only 3.0 innings surrendering six runs—five earned—on six hits and two walks. Reliever Mike Bozzi allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk in 2.0 innings. Adam Lewis threw 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Galetta (1-1) was tagged with the loss giving up two earned runs on three hits in an inning of work.

Rowan reliever Mike Swietanski (2-0) earned the win for the Profs, surrendering two earned runs on three hits over three innings. Reliever John O'Hara collected his fourth save of the season, tossing a scoreless 10th.

Zoll led Haverford's offense going 3-for-5 with an RBI. DeRosa, Butera, Galetta and Kaden each had two hits in the contest. DeRosa, Butera, Zoll and Kaden each doubled in the game and Carluccio notched his fourth triple of the season.

The Fords return to action with a non-conference game at Neumann University Wednesday afternoon. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
