Pitching, early runs lead baseball to doubleheader sweep of Red Devils

CARLISLE, Pa. – Haverford College swept host Dickinson College by scores of 5-4 and 6-3 in Centennial Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon.

The sweep improves Haverford to 3-2 in the league and 18-4 overall while Dickinson falls to 0-5 and 13-9, respectively.

Williams (4-1) started Game 1 for the Fords and earned the win throwing six innings and allowing the Red Devils four runs, one unearned, on six hits and a pair of walks.

The Fords took the early lead with a run in the top of the second but Dickinson reached Williams for two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Haverford answered back to regain the lead in the top of the third with two runs keyed by Mike Galetta's two-RBI double to center field that scored Charlie Carluccio and Jeff Butera.

After the Red Devils pushed a tying run across the plate in the bottom of the inning, the Fords were able to take the lead for good with two runs in the fifth.

Butera led off with a single to right followed by a Jeremy Zoll single to the same spot that moved Butera over to third. Galetta singled to left scoring Butera, then later in the inning Zoll came in for the second run on a sacrifice fly to center by Matt Liscovitz.

Dickinson edged closer with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning but Williams ended the threat then gave way to Mike Bozzi in the seventh. Bozzi shut down the Red Devils without allowing a base runner to earn his third save of the season.

The Fords gave Game 2 starting pitcher Bryan Henrick all the run support he would need in the second and third innings.

Bobby Bailey stroked a double to left field that scored Zoll to open Haverford's scoring in the top of the second. With Bailey at second and Galetta, who'd reached on an earlier single, at third, Liscovitz doubled to center scoring both Bailey and Galetta for a 3-0 lead.

Bailey figured in the Fords' clinching run in the third inning with a sharp grounder to second that scored Carluccio from third to give Haverford it's fourth run of the game.

Henrick kept the Red Devils in check for most of the 5.1 innings he was on the mound for the Fords allowing just two runs on nine hits and two strikeouts. Henrick (3-1) didn't walk a batter in earning the win.

Dan Hochburg allowed one run in 2.2 innings in relief of Henrick, and Patrick Falkoff earned his first save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth allowing just one Dickinson base runner via a walk.

Haverford heads right back to the diamond Sunday afternoon with a single game at 1:30 p.m. against visiting Swarthmore College in a make-up game from Friday's rained out date.
