Different styles, but same result as baseball sweeps McDaniel in league doubleheader

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Starting pitchers Jonny Williams and Bryan Henrick were like the Phillies' one-two punch of Halladay and Lee for Haverford College's baseball team Sunday afternoon at McDaniel College, limiting the Green Terror to just one unearned run in a 3-1, 10-0, sweep of a Centennial Conference doubleheader.

The Fords improve to 22-4 overall and 7-2 within the league after the pair of wins, while McDaniel falls to 10-11 and 3-6, respectively.

Sunday's opener was a pitcher's duel between the Fords' Jonny Williams and the Green Terror's Zach Jones as both worked into the ninth inning having allowed just one run each through the first eight.

Mike Galetta doubled to left-center field off Jones to start the ninth and later advanced to third on a Bobby Bailey one-out single through the left side. With Matt Liscovitz in the box, Bailey stole second then came around to score, along with Galetta, as Liscovitz sent a 1-0 Jones offering into left field for a two-RBI double to provide Williams and the Fords with the eventual winning runs.

Haverford got to Jones earlier with a run in the top of the fifth inning. A one-out single up the middle from Bailey turned into a run when, with the bases loaded and Bailey standing at third, Jones hit Jake Chaplin pushing Bailey across the plate.

McDaniel had evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame with an unearned run off Williams.

Williams (5-1) earned the complete-game victory surrendering just the unearned run off eight Green Terror hits and two walks while striking out a pair. Jones (4-2) took the loss striking out eight and walking one but giving up nine hits to the Haverford line-up.

The Fords broke open a tight 2-0 game in the nightcap with a five-run fifth inning, but the early pair of runs would prove to be all Henrick would need.

Henrick (5-1) earned the victory after throwing eight scoreless innings scattering six McDaniel hits while walking three and striking out four. Kyle Waney came on in relief to start the bottom of the ninth and fanned the side to complete the Haverford shutout.

The big fifth inning started with consecutive singles from Bobby Hubley and Louis DeRosa. The pair occupied second and third after a stolen base and ground-out setting up Charlie Carluccio who tripled in Hubley and DeRosa, then came home the easy way on a Jeff Butera home run over the left field fence off Green Terror starter Andrew Monger. The Fords added an unearned run to cap the inning and give Henrick a 7-0 lead.

Monger (3-2) took the loss giving up seven runs in six innings. In all, three Green Terror pitchers gave up 17 hits to the Fords.

Henrick had a stellar outing scattering six hits in eight innings of work, walking just three and striking out four.

Galetta, 2-for-4 with a run in Game 1, collected four hits and two RBIs while scoring once in the second game, and Hubley added four hits, an RBI and two runs. Carluccio picked up four RBI in his three-hit outing with Butera adding three RBI off two hits.

The Fords head right back into action Monday afternoon with a visit from Muhlenberg College in a game that had been rained out last Friday. Haverford and visiting Ursinus College meet up for a league game Tuesday followed by a non-conference home outing against Neumann College Wednesday. After a day off, the Fords square off on Ursinus' home diamond Friday before returning home for a doubleheader against Washington College Saturday afternoon to complete the busy week.
