Fords turn tables on host Ursinus earning league win on Bears' home field

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Turnabout was fair play Friday afternoon as Haverford College's baseball team earned a, 6-3, Centennial Conference victory over host Ursinus College, reversing the results of Thursday's game on the Fords' home diamond.

Haverford (24-5, 9-3 CC) never trailed in Friday's game, getting three runs off the Bears (9-15, 5-7) in the top of the first inning.

A run in the third added to the lead but Ursinus trimmed the margin by one with a run in the bottom half of the inning off Haverford starting pitcher Jonny Williams. The Fords pushed two more across the plate in the top of the fifth then surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to set what would eventually become the game's final score.

Pitching from both teams ruled the remainder of the contest as each staff quieted their opponent's bats allowing just a combined three hits, two from Haverford hitters, over the final four innings.

Haverford's quick start began when Louis DeRosa led off the game by reaching on an error by Ursinus' right fielder. After Jake Chaplin was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second, Charlie Carluccio stepped into the batter's box and slammed a double into the gap in left-center field to plate DeRosa and Chaplin. Another Bears error later in the inning led to Carluccio scoring the third run for Haverford, creating a 3-0 lead and an advantage that would last the rest of the day.

Carluccio finished his afternoon at the plate with a 2-for-3 day generating a pair of RBI and scoring once. Mike Galetta, Alex Hudak and Matt Liscovitz each collected one hit and one RBI in the victory for the Fords.

Williams (6-1) surrendered a total of three runs—only one was earned—in his seven innings of work to pick up the victory. He scattered four hits and allowed only one more base runner on a walk while fanning five. Patrick Falkoff came on in relief of Williams to start the eighth and earned his second save of the season as the Bears put just two runners on the base paths, one by a single the other by a walk, against the reliever.

Starter Nate Schnell (0-4) took a hard luck loss for Ursinus allowing a total of six runs, but only one went into the book as an earned run. Schnell gave up five hits and a pair of walks while striking out three in his 4.2 innings of work. Jake Kohler came on to close out the fifth then finished the game giving up two hits while collecting two strikeouts in his 4.1 innings on the mound.

Haverford continues conference play in its next outing, a 1 p.m. Sunday doubleheader at home against Washington College, which was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but pushed back a day because of expected thunderstorms on the opening day of the weekend.
