Baseball opens season with two wins

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team opened the 2011 season with a pair of shutout victories in its day-night doubleheader Sunday. The Fords defeated Illinois College, 9-0, in the morning and Dominican (Ill.) University, 8-0, in the evening. It is the first time the Fords have shutout opponents in consecutive games since a doubleheader sweep of Southern Vermont College in 2008.

In the win over Illinois the Fords rode the brilliant starting pitching of Colin Sarafin (1-0) and the hitting of Matt Liscovitz. Sarafin surrendered just three hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. Liscovitz went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and two runs scored.

Haverford (2-0) scored four runs in the first inning, added two in the fourth and three in the eighth. Louis DeRosa went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Bobby Bailey collected a pair of hits including a double. Jake Chaplin had one hit and scored two runs.

Kevin Goff threw two scoreless innings in relief of Sarafin.

In the nightcap starting pitching led the Fords again as Jonny Williams (1-0) struck out six batters in six innings for the victory. Brett Cohen, Mike Galetta and Justin Coulter combined to toss the final three innings.

The game was scoreless through four innings, but Haverford got on the board in the top of the fifth thanks to singles by Bailey and Jeremy Zoll to lead off the frame. Liscovitz drove in the first run with a single and DeRosa followed with a sacrifice fly.

The Fords blew the game wide open with a six-run eighth. Bailey singled, bringing home two runs while Charlie Carluccio drove in another run with a double.

Chaplin and Bailey both went 2-for-4 in the game.

The Fords play another doubleheader Monday, taking on Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College. The first game gets underway at 1 p.m.
