Baseball hangs on for 7-6 win over Olivet

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team held on for a 7-6 victory over Olivet (Mich.) College Tuesday afternoon at Terry Park. The Fords scored three times in the third inning to take the lead and added two runs in the sixth which ended up making the difference.

Brett Cohen made his first collegiate start and did not allow an earned run in 4.2 innings pitched. Cohen allowed just two hits and fanned six batters. Jonny Black (1-0) relieved Cohen gave up one run while striking out four to earn the win.

Haverford (5-0) scored one run in the bottom of the first, but Olivet plated two in the second. Alex Hudak tied the score with an RBI single in the third and Justin Coulter followed with a single of his own that brought home two runs for a 3-1 lead.

Olivet scored a run in the fifth, but the Fords scored twice in the sixth thanks to Charlie Carluccio's RBI double and Mike Galetta's run-scoring single.

Kevin Goff tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings and Mike Bozzi pitched the ninth to earn his first save of the season. Bozzi surrendered two runs, but got out of the jam.

Jake Chaplin went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Carluccio collected four hits and scored a pair of runs while Galetta drove in two and scored a run.

The Fords have an off-day Wednesday before closing out their week-long trip with four games in three days. Haverford takes on Kenyon College Thursday at 5 p.m.
