Pair of complete games help baseball sweep Defiance in twin-bill

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team swept its doubleheader against Defiance (Ohio) College Friday, taking Game 1, 6-1, and the nightcap, 9-4. Colin Sarafin (2-0) and Jonny Williams (2-0) both tossed complete games to earn victories.

Sarafin struck out seven and allowed just one run on three hits in his seven innings of work in Game 1. Meanwhile, Jeff Butera's three-run homer in the first inning gave Sarafin all the support he needed.

Haverford (8-0) added three more runs in the second thanks to RBI singles by Jake Chaplin and Bobby Bailey. Chaplin went 3-for-4 and scored two runs while Bailey collected two hits.

In Game 2, Defiance took an early 4-0 lead after four innings, but the Fords chipped away by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI triple by Matt Liscovitz plated the first run and Bailey brought in two runs including the tying run with a two-out single. In the sixth, Haverford took the lead thanks a Mike Galetta three-run home run to left center.

Williams surrendered four earned runs on eight hits while fanning eight batters to pick up the win.

The Fords conclude their trip Saturday morning against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at 9 a.m.
