Baseball takes Coast Guard, 11-3, to close out spring trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team completed its spring break trip unblemished by defeating the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 11-3, Saturday morning. With the score tied at 3-3 in the fourth inning, Jake Chaplin's two-RBI double plated the go-ahead run.

Haverford (9-0) scored three times in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single by Jeff Butera, followed by a Bobby Bailey single that scored two more runs. Coast Guard rallied for three runs in the third, but that was all the Fords surrendered in the game.

After Chaplin's double in the fourth, Haverford scored three runs in the sixth and three more in the ninth.

Except for the third inning, starter Dan Hochberg (2-0) was in control. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Minus the third inning, Hochberg held Coast Guard to just four hits and no runs. He allowed just one baserunner over his final three frames.

Bryan Henrick, Jonny Black and Mike Bozzi each threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Chaplin, Charlie Carluccio, Mike Galetta, Bailey, Alex Hudak and Matt Liscovitz all had two hits apiece. Chaplin drove in three runs and scored a pair of runs while Bailey had two RBI.

The Fords head north for their home opener this Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. against Wesley (Del.) College.
