GMC hands baseball first loss of season, 10-4

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team was handed its first defeat of the season, falling to visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College, 10-4, on a beautiful Thursday afternoon at Class of '16 Field.

Golden Griffins starter R.J. Finzio (2-0) settled in through the middle innings and did not allow a Haverford (10-1) baserunner from the third through sixth innings. Finizio allowed four hits through the first three innings, but settled in after that and retired 10 consecutive batters until Mike Galetta's single to lead off the seventh ended Finzio's day.

Gwynedd-Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a run in the first and two in the second which included a solo homer by Brian Susten. GMC could have added another run in the second, but Matt Liscovitz's throw to the plate from center field nailed Mike Albert who was trying to tag up from third. The Fords got one run in the bottom of the inning as Liscovitz doubled to center, scoring Galetta.

GMC plated single runs in the third, fifth and sixth off Fords' starter Colin Sarafin (2-1) for a 6-1 lead. Sarafin exited after the sixth and was charged with five earned runs on 11 hits. After the Golden Griffins tacked on their seventh run in the seventh off Dan Hochberg, Haverford threatened in the bottom of the frame. With runners on first and second, Justin Coulter singled to left to bring home Bobby Bailey. Pinch-hitter Jeremy Zoll coaxed a walk from reliever Jim Myarick and Louis DeRosa grounded out to score Liscovitz. With the bases loaded two batters later, Charlie Carluccio's line drive to deep center was caught to end the threat.

The Golden Griffins scored three more runs in the ninth to add to their lead. Liscovitz collected his second hit of the day when he sent Casey Clark's first pitch of the ninth well past the left field wall for his first home run of the season.

The Fords are home again Friday, hosting the College of New Jersey at 3:30 p.m.
