Baseball silenced by Lions, 8-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team was held to just one run on seven hits in its 8-1 loss to The College of New Jersey Friday at Class of '16 Field. The Lions led from the get-go with a four-run first inning and added runs in the fifth and ninth innings.

Haverford's (10-2) offense was held quiet all day thanks to the pitching of TCNJ (10-2) starter Robert Graber (2-0) who allowed one run on five hits in eight innings of work. Graber allowed just three Fords to reach third base all game and used three double plays in the third through fifth innings to end threats.

The Lions got to Haverford starter Brett Cohen (0-1) for four runs in the first. Cohen settled in after the first and surrendered just one hit until the fifth inning, but two more runs in the fifth ended Cohen's day. Jonny Black was terrific in his four innings of relief. He held the Lions to just two hits and no runs until the ninth. TCNJ scored two runs off Black in the ninth, but Justin Coulter got the final out of the inning, stranding two baserunners.

The Fords' only run came in the sixth as Alex Hudak and Louis DeRosa both singled to lead off the inning and were moved to second and third by Jake Chaplin's groundout. Charlie Carluccio brought in Hudak with a sacrifice fly.

DeRosa and Carluccio both had two-hit days for the Fords.

Haverford hits the road Saturday, traveling to Susquehanna University for a doubleheader. The first game gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
