Fords back on winning track, sweep Susquehanna in non-conference action

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team registered all its runs in one inning during a 4-0 Game 1 victory over host Susquehanna University Saturday afternoon in non-conference action, then made noise in several innings to complete the sweep over the Crusaders with an 8-2 victory in Game 2.

The Fords (12-2) got solid pitching on the day from Jonny Williams and Dan Hochberg who limited the Crusaders (4-0) to just a pair of runs.

Williams (3-0) picked up the complete-game victory in the opener scattering seven hits around three walks and six strikeouts. All the run support he would need came from an efficient fourth-inning.

Louis DeRosa singled to lead off the inning then moved to second on a Jake Chaplin walk. The pair each advanced a base with Charlie Carluccio's sacrifice bunt.

Mike Galetta sliced a double down the left-field line to score DeRosa and Chaplin, giving Williams and the Fords a 2-0 lead. Bobby Bailey reached first on a fielder's choice, moving Galetta up to third, then stole second. Jeremy Zoll singled to center plating Galetta and Bailey for insurance runs that Williams didn't need.

Other than the top of the fourth, Susquehanna's Keith Needham (0-3) nearly matched Williams allowing just the one big inning but otherwise surrending just four other hits in his loss while walking one and striking out five.

Game 2 saw runs posted on the scoreboard right off the bat as the Fords, with two outs, put two up in the top-half of the first-inning then the Crusaders scored twice in the bottom of the frame.

After a quick two outs in the top of the second, Justin Coulter and DeRosa singled then later scored on a Carluccio double down the left-field line.

Haverford added three more runs in the top of the fourth and one more in the top of the sixth, but the Fords' pitching didn't need the help as Hochburg, Mike Bozzi and Galetta held Susquehanna scoreless over the final six innings.

Hochberg (3-0) earned the win pitching five innings, surrendering two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four. Bozzi pitched the sixth without allowing a hit and Galetta closed out the win with a one-hit seventh.

Starter Matt Lottes (1-2) took the loss for the Crusaders allowing six runs on four walks with two strikeouts over 3.2 innings.

The Fords welcome Eastern University to Class of '16 Field next Tuesday for a Main Line match-up starting at 3:30 p.m.
