Sarafin’s gem leads baseball to 5-3 win over Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Colin Sarafin tossed 8.1 innings to help the Haverford College baseball team defeat Swarthmore, 5-3, Tuesday afternoon for its first Centennial Conference win of the season.

Sarafin (3-1) allowed just two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out four batters. He faced the minimum through the first three innings, but a pair of Swarthmore (11-6, 2-1 CC) runs in the fourth tied the score. Sarafin allowed just two baserunners over the next three frames and despite a Garnet unearned run in the eighth Sarafin got through the inning and gave way to Dan Hochberg with one out and two on in the ninth.

Haverford (15-4, 1-2) was handed its first run in the third inning thanks to two Swarthmore errors with two outs. In the fourth the Fords plated another run when Bobby Bailey's double to right center scored Jeremy Zoll.

Mike Cameron's double in the bottom of the inning scored two runs to tie the game up at 2-2, but the Fords were at it again in the seventh. Justin Coulter doubled with one out and Louis DeRosa followed with an RBI single for the go-ahead run. After a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch moved DeRosa to third, Charlie Carluccio's ground ball to second resulted in an error and plated DeRosa.

Anthony Montalbano's two-out single in the eighth scored Rory McTear to bring the Garnet within a run, 4-3, but in the ninth DeRosa singled and stole second and then scored on Jake Chaplin's single. Sarafin retired the first batter of the ninth, but gave up a walk and a single which ended his day. Hochberg allowed a single to Bryce Codell, but induced a game-ending double play from Spencer Ross for his second save of the season.

DeRosa and Zoll both had two-hit days for the Fords. DeRosa also scored three runs.

Haverford returns home Wednesday to host Penn State University-Berks at 3:30 p.m.
