Galetta’s two-run blast leads baseball to 8-3 win over Nittany Lions

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team trailed Penn State University Berks 3-1 after five innings Wednesday afternoon, but a three-run sixth which was capped by Mike Galetta's towering two-run home run put the Fords in front for good. Haverford tacked four runs in the eighth for an 8-3 win.

Galetta went 3-for-4 with four RBI on the day. Charlie Carluccio and Jeff Butera both collected two hits and scored two runs while Butera knocked in a pair of runs.

Penn State-Berks (5-11) scored a run in the first off Haverford (16-4) starter Brett Cohen on a sacrifice fly and added one more in the second on Aaron Wilkins double down the left field line. The Fords scored a run in the bottom of the first on Butera's RBI single to right field.

The Nittany Lions threatened again in the third, but Bobby Bailey nailed Rich Schlamowitz who was attempting to tag up from third on a fly out. In the fifth, PSU-Berks took a two run lead thanks to Connor Corson's seeing-eye RBI single up the middle past a drawn-in infield.

Carluccio got the Fords' rally going in the sixth by doubling to center field and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Butera singled up the middle to score Carluccio and bring starter Jade Hendrick's day to an end after 5.1 innings pitched. Galetta greeted reliever Michael Ference (2-1) with his go-ahead two-run homer.

In the ninth, Carluccio doubled for the second time on the day and Galetta added two more RBI's with a single. Bobby Hubley and Louis DeRosa followed with run-scoring singles as well.

Kevin Goff (1-0), Patrick Falkoff and Mike Bozzi combined to toss 4.0 scoreless innings in relief of Cohen. The trio of relievers allowed just three baserunners in the final four frames.

The Fords host Swarthmore College Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Centennial Conference action. Haverford defeated the Garnet, 5-3, Tuesday.
