Four from baseball tabbed for all-region team; DeRosa picks up Gold Glove

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) released its 2011 ABCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team on Tuesday afternoon and the list included a quartet of Haverford College baseball players led by first-team honoree Charlie Carluccio.

Carluccio was the lone first-team all-region player for a Fords team that set a single-season record for wins this spring with 32. Mike Galetta was named second-team all-region while Jeff Butera and Bryan Henrick were tabbed for the third team. Second baseman Louis DeRosa was named to the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team.

The 2011 Centennial Conference Player of the Year, Carluccio ended the season leading the league in hits (61) and RBIs (46), and posted the conference's second-highest batting average (.391). During the year he hit safely in 17 consecutive games from March 19 through April 17, registered a multi-hit game 19 times and multi-RBI games 12 times, scored at least two runs in 11 games and hit two or more doubles in a game five times.

A senior shortstop, Carluccio set single-season school records for runs scored (42), hits and assists (137) and finished his career with team records for runs scored (144), hits (191), RBIs (148) and assists (482).

Galetta, a senior third-baseman and first-team all-conference selection, collected 57 hits during the year, second-most in the league behind only Carluccio, and led the conference with 17 doubles which was also a new single-season mark for the Fords. He ended the season on a 13-game hitting streak and accumulated 17 multi-hit games in his final campaign with the Fords.

Senior left fielder Jeff Butera picked up his second consecutive third-team all-region honor. Butera, a first-team all-Centennial honoree, rapped out a multi-hit game 17 times throughout the year and knocked in two or more RBIs 12 times. He finished his Haverford career ranked third in the program in RBIs with 112, fourth in doubles (34) and sixth in hits (151).

Junior left-handed pitcher Bryan Henrick, picking up his first all-region mention, led the Centennial in wins (8) which was also a single-season high for the program. Henrick, named to the conference's second team, won five consectuive starts between Apr. 2-30 and picked up a sixth win in a relief role during that span.

DeRosa, a first-team all-Centennial senior, accumulated the most double-plays turned, 93, in program history. His 118 assists were third-most in the league in 2011 but the defensive wizard was also an offensive force for Haverford during the year. DeRosa led the conference and set a single-season record for the Fords with 34 stolen bases -- which ranked eighth in the NCAA -- and stole two or more bases in a game nine times. He was fourth in the Centennial with 51 hits and owned an 11-game hitting streak (April 17 - May 1).

Haverford was 32-10 this spring which, with a winning percentage of .762, is the best record in program history. The Fords, led by Centennial coach of the year Dave Beccaria, played their way into the championship finale of the conference postseason tournament.
