Zoll opens season with solid day at the plate for Fords

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jeremy Zoll opened his senior campaign with a 3-for-6 day at the plate, but Haverford College dropped a pair of seven-inning games to Neumann University, 3-2 and 6-4, in non-conference baseball action Sunday afternoon to kick off the 2012 season.

The Fords (0-2) and Knights (2-0) each notched a run in the first inning of Game 1 but the starting pitchers, Jonny Williams for Haverford and Russ Gilliam for Neumann, settled in after that and kept the opposing bats quiet.

The Fords took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth when Neumann generated one earned and one unearned run -- which proved to be the game-winner -- off Williams (0-1) who allowed only five hits while striking out five over six innings of work.

Gilliam (1-0) surrendered six hits and two earned runs and fanned four for the win.

Zoll collected an RBI off a pair of hits, and Mike Tentilucci, Alex Hudak, Matt Liscovitz and Nick Miranda registered one hit apiece in the loss.

Game 2 saw the Fords break out to a 3-1 lead after the first but Neumann put up four runs in the top of the third and added a home run in the fifth to rally from behind. The Fords had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to complete the come-back.

Bryan Henrick (0-1) started for Haverford and took the loss, allowing six runs off 11 hits without surrendering a walk in 6.2 innings. Kevin Goff came on in relief in the seventh and retired the only two batters he faced.

Liscovitz, Casey Fox and William Bannard each picked up a double for the Fords and Zoll added his third hit of the day for another RBI. Bannard registered two RBIs with his two-bagger and added a third with a ground-out. Liscovitz scored two of the Haverford runs.

The opening week of the season continues Monday for the Fords with a morning doubleheader against Wheaton (Ill.) College.
