Fords pick up first win of season downing Wheaton

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Brett Cohen picked up the win and both Jake Chaplin and Nick Miranda rapped out two hits apiece and scored twice in Haverford College's 9-5 non-conference baseball victory over Wheaton (Ill.) College on Monday afternoon. The Thunder downed the Fords, 14-6, in the opener of the doubleheader.

For the day, Chaplin and Miranda collected four hits each for Haverford (1-3) with Chaplin adding five RBIs and three runs scored. Wheaton split a doubleheader for the second day in a row to move its record to 2-2.

The Fords took advantage of two Wheaton errors and a wild pitch to jump out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the third inning in Game 2. A pair of earned runs in the top of the fourth made it 6-0 before the Thunder would break through with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Another Thunder run in the fifth trimmed the lead by one but the Fords scratched out three more in the top of the sixth to put the game away.

Haverford starter Brett Cohen (1-0) had a strong outing allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out four in four innings of work. Michael de Armas and closer Mike Bozzi came on in relief and teamed up to close out the win, surrendering three harmless runs on six hits over the game's last three innings.

Wheaton starter Miles Veth (0-1) took the loss after giving up five earned, and four unearned runs in 5.1 innings on the mound.

The day's opener saw the Thunder put up seven unearned runs in the top of the first and one more run in the second off Haverford starter Tommy Bergjans' only mistake of the game for a quick 8-1 lead from which Haverford wasn't able to bounce back.

Chaplin collected four of his five RBIs during Game 1. His single to center field in the third scored Mike Tentilucci, then Chaplin laced a two-out single into the gap to clear the bases in the sixth scoring Bobby Hubley, Clay Bloszies and Tentilucci.

Bergjans (0-1) took the loss for Haverford despite surrendering just one earned run off four Wheaton hits in 2.1 innings. Three errors over the first three innings allowed eight unearned runs to cross the plate against the unlucky freshman. Wheaton's Evan Rahn (1-0) earned the win after giving up two runs in five innings.

The Fords play a single, nine-inning game Tuesday, squaring off against Emerson (Mass.) College at 10 a.m.
