Fords, Golden Eagles split in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jonny Williams' complete game helped lead Haverford College to a 5-2 non-conference victory in the opener of a Friday doubleheader against St. Joseph's College (Long Island), but the Golden Eagles were able to earn a split with a 6-5 defeat of the Fords in the nightcap.

Williams threw seven innings for Haverford (4-4) in Game 1 allowing St. Joseph's (2-5) one earned, and one unearned run over seven innings. He failed to allow a walk and fanned six.

Haverford broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth then added two insurance runs in the sixth to provide Williams with an even larger cushion heading into the final inning.

Nick Miranda picked up two RBIs while Casey Fox and Justin Coulter, whose 2-for-3 day included a double, added one apiece.

Game 2 looked good for the Fords early as they owned a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Golden Eagles trimmed the lead to one with three runs in the bottom of the fourth but Coulter's big bat struck again as his solo home run in the fifth pushed the Haverford advantage back to two.

St. Joseph's plated three runs in the bottom half of the sixth, though, then held on for the come-from-behind victory.

Starting pitcher Bryan Henrick went 5.2 innings for the Fords and took the loss allowing six runs on 11 hits and three walks. Max Gerard came on in relief in the sixth and registered the final out of the inning.

Coulter continued his strong day at the plate in Game 2 with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring once and coming up with a pair of RBIs. Jake Chaplin, Jeremy Zoll and Bobby Hubley also had multi-hit games for Haverford. Both Chaplin and Zoll hit triples in the contest and scored one run apiece.

The Fords close out the spring trip to Florida with a single, nine-inning non-conference contest Saturday at 9 a.m. against Kenyon College.
