Liscovitz, Hudak help push Fords past Mighty Macs

HAVERFORD, Pa. –  A sacrifice fly from Matt Liscovitz brought home Justin Coulter for what would prove to be the winning run Tuesday afternoon as Haverford College defeated Immaculata University, 5-2, in non-conference baseball action in the Fords' home opener at Kannerstein Field.

With Haverford  trailing 2-0, Liscovitz brought home the first run for the Fords (6-4) in the bottom of the fourth inning when he laced a one-hopper to the left field fence scoring Alex Hudak who had singled through the left side earlier in the inning. With two outs in the inning, Liscovitz was able to cross the plate for the tying run while Luke Frankiw was in a run down between first and second base.

The game-winning RBI came in the sixth off Immaculata (3-5) starting pitcher Aaron Dietrich (0-2) who had walked Coulter to lead off the inning. Coulter moved up to second on a Hudak single then both runners advanced a base on Bobby Hubley's sacrifice bunt to set up Liscovitz who turned on a one-out Dietrich offering, sending it deep to left where Mighty Macs left fielder Brandon Siebert was able to settle under it on the warning track allowing Coulter to easily tag up for the eventual winning run.

Jake Chaplin, Casey Fox and Hudak figured in a pair of insurance runs for the Fords in the seventh, highlighted by Chaplin's run on a Fox single to left-center field.

Chaplin walked and stole second, then raced around third toward home on Fox's single. Siebert's throw to the plate arrived just ahead of Chaplin but he ran around the tag of catcher Joseph Knazek then dove back to the plate for the first of the two runs scored in the inning. Fox came in to score on a Hudak double, that snuck just inside of the third base bag, for the game's final run.

Haverford starting pitcher Brett Cohen settled in after some early trouble to hold the Mighty Macs scoreless into the sixth inning. A one-out walk ended Cohen's day and he gave way to Kyle Waney with the score still tied at 2-2.

Waney (2-0) was nearly flawless surrendering two harmless singles while striking out four without issuing a walk in 2.2 innings. He earned the win when Coulter scored to put Haverford ahead in the sixth. Closer Mike Bozzi came on for the ninth and, though he allowed a pair of singles, finished off inning and earned the save.

Hudak was 3-for-4 at the plate Tuesday with Fox joining him on the multi-hit list with a pair of singles. Liscovitz finished with a pair of RBIs, Fox registered one and Hudak collected the final RBI.

Haverford jumps right back into action without a day off as it travels to Gwynedd-Mercy College for another nine-inning non-conference game, Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
