Griffins rally to take one from Fords

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – An early one-run lead didn't hold up for Haverford College Wednesday afternoon as it lost an 11-3 decision to host Gwynedd-Mercy College in non-conference baseball action.

The Fords (6-5) scored twice in the first inning then once more in the second to take a 3-2 lead over the Griffins (7-3) heading into the third inning. Gwynedd-Mercy scored nine unanswered runs in their next six at-bats to rally for the victory.

Bryan Henrick (0-3) was the hard-luck starter for Haverford as he suffered the loss after surrendering just one earned run over five innings of work. Two errors and a catcher's interference call within the first four innings allowed the Griffins to plate three unearned runs off the senior lefty who gave up just four hits.

Haverford jumped on Gwynedd starter Andrew Schaefer for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, kick-started by Mike Tentilucci's lead-off single to left field. Tentilluci scored during a double-play ball, and Jake Chaplin came around for the second run of the inning on Alex Hudak's single to center field.

Nick Miranda's one-out single to left got the Fords going in the next frame. After he stole second, Miranda came in for Haverford's third run on Chaplin's single through the left side of the infield.

Those would be the only runs for the Fords, however, as they left six runners in scoring position over the next six innings. Schaefer settled down after his early troubles and limited Haverford to three more hits before giving way to relief help at the start of the seventh.

Chaplin, Bobby Hubley and Miranda each collected two hits apiece in the loss.

The Fords will hit the road again for their next outing, Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference tilt at The College of New Jersey.
