Miranda homers, scores twice in loss to Wesley

DOVER, Del. – Nick Miranda's first collegiate home run staked Haverford College to an early lead Tuesday at Wesley College, but the Wolverines battled back with a seven-run seventh inning for an 8-3 non-conference baseball victory over the visiting Fords at Bob Reed Field.

Haverford (7-8) falls below the .500 mark with the loss while Wesley improves to 13-4.

Miranda registered his first homer with a two-out shot over the right-field fence off Wesley starter Tommy Reapsome in the top of the third inning. Jake Chaplin and Casey Fox reached on a pair of singles following Miranda's dinger but the pair were left stranded.

Wesley pulled even in the bottom of the inning, despite only putting one batter on the base paths. Rob Benedict doubled then stole third, and came in to score on a wild pitch with two outs.

The Fords jumped back in front in the fifth behind sacrifice flies from Chaplin and Fox for a 3-1 lead which held up until the fateful seventh inning.

Wesley pushed three runs across before an out was recorded, then later added four unearned runs off Haverford starter Bryan Henrick and reliever Max Gerard.

Reapsome gave way to Andrew Cooper to start the sixth and Cooper (1-0), who earned the win as the pitcher of record in the seventh, and Rich Lober handcuffed the Haverford batters, allowing only three base runners over the final four innings.

Mike Tentilucci registered a pair of hits in the game for Haverford but was left stranded at third in the seventh and at first base in the ninth. Miranda, Chaplin and Fox each finished with one RBI in the loss.

Henrick (0-4) pitched six strong innings for the Fords before running into trouble in the seventh. Over the first six frames he spread out five Wolverine hits, walked one and fanned five while allowing just the one run.

The Fords head right back into action Wednesday with a non-conference visit from Stockton College. Game time at Kannerstein Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
