Big inning, Black's pitching help Fords down Scarlet Raptors

CAMDEN, N.J. – A five-run third inning provided Haverford College's starting pitcher Jonny Black with more than enough of a cushion in the Fords' 9-4 non-conference baseball win Wednesday afternoon over host Rutgers-Camden at Campbell's Field.

The Fords (8-11) took what they were given in their big inning as the five runs came from just three hits and a sacrifice fly out. Rutgers (9-9) starting pitcher Collin McGowan walked the first two batters he faced in the frame then served up an RBI-single to Haverford's Jake Chaplin.

Paul Walters relieved McGowan and gave up two more walks, a pair of singles and Mike Tentilucci's sacrifice fly to allow Haverford to build a 5-0 lead for Black. The Fords' starter worked six innings surrendering a pair of runs while scattering nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts to earn the win, his first of the season.

Mike Bozzi, Max Gerard, Kyle Waney and Michael de Armas teamed up in relief of Black over the final three innings and allowed the Scarlet Raptors only two more runs off four hits and a walk.

The top of the order had a big day for the Fords' offense as Nick Miranda, Chaplin, Marley Randazzo and Jeremy Zoll collected nine of the team's 11 hits, seven RBIs, eight runs, and two of the team's six stolen bases.

Randazzo was 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored, and Chaplin was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs. Zoll's plate appearances generated four RBIs and a run for Haverford in a win that broke a four-game losing streak.

The Fords travel to Swarthmore College on Friday for the back half of a home and home series against the Garnet that began on Tuesday with the visitors taking a road win over host Haverford. Saturday brings Dickinson College to Kannerstein Field for a doubleheader against the Fords.
