Fords pound out 9 runs in win over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Jeremy Zoll scored the game's first run then provided what ended up being the game-winning RBI for Haverford College in its 9-1 Centennial Conference victory Friday afternoon over host Swarthmore College at Clothier Field.

Friday's win allowed the Fords (9-11, 1-1 CC) to earn a season split against Swarthmore (15-5, 1-1) which had won Tuesday's match-up at Kannerstein Field. The Haverford victory also pushes the Fords' lead over the Garnet to 7.5-3.5 in the Hood Trophy all(Centennial)-sport competition between the two institutions.

Zoll's one-out single up the middle in the top of the fourth inning turned into the first run of the game when he came in to score on Marley Randazzo's two-out double down the right-field line.

Nick Miranda picked up a one-out infield single in the fifth then later came around to score the eventual game-winning run on a Zoll single into right-center field.

Those would be all the runs Haverford starting pitcher Tommy Bergjans would need as he shut down a Swarthmore attack which had racked up 14 hits in Tuesday's victory. Bergjans threw seven innings of shutout ball, fanning 10 while allowing just four hits and a pair of walks. The freshman right-hander struck out multiple batters in each of the first three innings and failed to allow a base runner past second base after the bottom of the first.

Kevin Goff started the eighth in relief of Bergjans and surrendered just one run off three Swarthmore hits over the final two innings.

Goff's job was made easier after a seven-run top of the eighth inning which broke the game open.

Haverford collected six hits -- including two doubles and a pair of back-to-back squeeze play bunt singles -- and one sacrifice fly to knock out Swarthmore starter Kyle Crawford who up to that point had allowed just the pair of one-run innings to keep his team close.

Zoll finished the day with three hits and an RBI, and scored two of the Fords' runs. Miranda collected a pair of singles, stole one base and scored twice. Jake Chaplin and Randazzo, with three hits and two hits, respectively, registered the other multi-hit games for Haverford which saw seven different players score at least one run in a 14-hit attack.

Bergjans' win moves his season record to 2-2 while Crawford (4-1) took the loss for his first of the spring.

Haverford squares off against visiting Dickinson College at Kannerstein Field on Saturday afternoon with the first game of the conference doubleheader kicking off at 12:30 p.m.
