Timely hitting, strong pitching lead Fords to win over Mules

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford College pieced together six runs offensively and received a complete-game outing from pitcher Jonny Black on Tuesday afternoon at Kannerstein Field in a 6-2 Centennial Conference win over visiting Muhlenberg College.

Haverford, winners of five straight, slips above the .500 mark with a 12-11 overall record and maintains its spot among the conference leaders with a 4-1 league mark. Muhlenberg drops to 2-3 within the conference and 18-9 overall.

Black (2-0) went the distance for the Fords getting stronger as the innings wore on. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam without surrendering a run in the top of the third inning, then allowed a two-run home run in the fourth before settling into a rhythm and sailing through the rest of the game.

Muhlenberg managed just three base-runners in the final five frames against Black who gave up seven hits and one walk while striking out 10 over his nine innings of work on the mound.

The Fords broke on top in the third after Matt Liscovitz led off the inning with a triple to the center field fence. He scored the game's initial run when the next batter, Mike Tentilucci, executed a perfect sacrifice bunt down the first-base line.

Muhlenberg's two-run shot in the fourth gave the lead to the visitors but Haverford scratched out three runs on three singles and a throwing error in the fifth to go ahead for good.

Casey Fox added some breathing room for Black in the sixth with a one-out home run to left field, doubling the Fords' lead from two to four. It was Fox's second home run of the season.

Muhlenberg starting pitcher  Rob Shannon (5-2) only allowed seven hits and a walk over nine innings but his few mistakes proved costly as the Fords took advantage of their opportunities to defeat Shannon and the Mules.

Haverford takes to the road Wednesday for a non-conference game against Moravian College then heads to Allentown, Pa., on Thursday for a conference re-match at Muhlenberg.
