BETHELEHEM, Pa. – A five-game win streak came to a quiet end Wednesday afternoon for the Haverford College baseball team as the visiting Fords fell,10-3, to Moravian College in a non-conference match-up.
Haverford (12-12) raced in front of the Greyhounds (17-10) with a pair of first-inning runs but Moravian answered with three in the bottom of the inning to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Nick Miranda's lead-off walk opened the game for the Fords. He moved to second on Jake Chaplin's single through the left side then came in to score the first run on Justin Coulter's single to center field. Chaplin came home for the second run on a throwing error by the first baseman during a fielder's choice at-bat by Alex Hudak.
Coulter started the game on the mound for Haverford and immediately found himself in a jam with the bases loaded. Moravian pieced together three runs on three singles and a pair of walks to take a 3-2 lead.
A four-run fourth inning by the Greyhounds stretched the advantage but Moravian starter Kevin O'Keefe did a good job of keeping the Fords' bats -- which had been producing nearly nine runs per outing during the win streak -- quiet. In the sixth he surrendered one more run to the Fords on a walk and stolen base by Chaplin, and a Bobby Hubley double down the left field line, but that would be the final Haverford threat as O'Keefe and a pair of relievers muffled the bats that had been banging out hits and runs prior to Wednesday's game.
Chaplin scored twice in the game and registered his 10th stolen base of the season to tie for the team lead. Hubley finished with a 2-for-4 day at the plate collecting one RBI.
Coulter (0-1) took the loss for Haverford throwing five innings and surrendering seven runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one. O'Keefe (1-3) earned the win allowing two earned and one unearned run off of four Haverford hits over seven innings of work.
The Fords jump back into action Thursday with a trip to Allentown, Pa., where they'll square off against Muhlenberg College in a re-match of Tuesday's Centennial Conference game at Kannerstein Field where Haverford defeated the visiting Mules, 6-2.
