Fords complete sweep of Mules

ALLENTOWN, Pa. –  A six-run inning and another stellar outing from Tommy Bergjans allowed Haverford College's baseball team to take an 8-2 Centennial Conference victory from host Muhlenberg College on Thursday afternoon, completing a season sweep of the series following Tuesday's win over the Mules at home on Kannerstein Field.

Haverford (13-11, 5-1 CC) broke open a 1-0 game with six runs in the top of the third inning off Muhlenberg (18-10, 2-4) starting pitcher Christian Ferlan.

Jeremy Zoll's RBI-single up the middle plated Nick Miranda for the first run in the big inning. Jake Chaplin, who had walked following Miranda's lead-off single and stolen base, scored on Bobby Hubley's double down the left-field line. Zoll and Hubley added two more runs on Matt Liscovitz's single through the left side. Mike Tentilucci's triple to the gap in left-center easily plated Liscovitz, and then Tentilucci notched the final tally on a wild pitch by Ferlan.

The seven-run lead was more than enough for Bergjans who was hurling a no-hitter through the first five innings. One walk was the only blemish during that time frame and the freshman right-hander had fanned eight along the way.

Muhlenberg scratched for two runs in the sixth but that wasn't going to be nearly enough as the Fords added one more run in the seventh, courtesy of a Zoll RBI-single up the middle scoring Miranda, and Bergjans shut the door on the Mules over the final three frames.

Bergjans (3-2) earned the complete-game win scattering five hits and allowing one walk while striking out 15, surpassing the single-game program mark of 11 set by Travis Zier in a victory over visiting Ursinus College on April 10, 2007. The win was the second in a row for Bergjans who fanned 10 without allowing a run over seven innings on the mound at Swarthmore College on Friday, March 30 in a 9-1 Haverford win.

Ferlan (4-1) took the loss for the Mules giving up six earned and one unearned run off eight Haverford hits and a pair of walks over six innings of work.

McDaniel College (12-7, 1-4 CC) comes to Kannerstein for the Fords' next outing, a Saturday, April 7 conference doubleheader against the Green Terror starting at 12:30 p.m.
