Unearned runs lead to loss at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Leadoff batter Nick Miranda reached base each of his five appearances at the plate picking up a pair of stolen bases and two runs for Haverford College, but the Fords surrendered five unearned runs to host Ursinus College and dropped a 5-4 Centennial Conference decision Tuesday afternoon.

Haverford (13-15, 5-4 CC) scored first then later added two more runs for a 3-0 lead over the Bears (12-14, 4-5) after three innings. Ursinus plated its first unearned run in the bottom of the fourth then, after the Fords had added a run in the top half of the sixth, scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.

The Fords tried to scratch for the tying run in the seventh and eighth but weren't able to push the equalizer across the plate.

Jeremy Zoll led off the seventh with a walk, stole two bases, but was left stranded at third. The Fords had runners at first and second base with one out in the eighth but again were unable to find the key hit.

Haverford starter Tommy Bergjans (3-3) pitched into the sixth inning before giving way to reliever Kevin Goff. Bergjans allowed six hits, four walks and five unearned runs while fanning seven. Goff surrendered only one hit and a walk to go along with four strikeouts over the final 2.1 innings.

Miranda collected three singles, one walk, and was hit by a pitch to reach safely five times. He scored the Fords' opening run and then the first of two Haverford runs in the third.

Jake Chaplin was 3-for 5 with an RBI and Justin Coulter was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored in the loss.

The Fords get another crack at Ursinus with the back half of the home-and-home series on Friday as the Bears travel to Kannerstein Field for the series closer.
