Bottom of order generates runs but Fords fall to Ursinus

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The bottom of the order registered more than half of the team's 13 hits Friday afternoon, but host Haverford College dropped an 11-8 Centennial Conference decision to Ursinus College at Kannerstein Field.

The loss evens the Fords' conference record at 5-5 while pushing their overall record to 13-16. Ursinus, 5-5 in the Centennial and 13-14 overall, earns the season series sweep of Haverford with Friday's victory.

The seven-eight-nine batters in the Fords' lineup provided much of the punch in the offense Friday.

Matt Liscovitz laced a pair of singles down the left-field line during the game and scored both times. Mike Tentilucci enjoyed a 4-for-5 day at the plate, stole one base and also scored twice. In the nine-hole, William Bannard doubled home Tentilucci in the fifth inning and picked up another RBI in Haverford's five-run fifth inning.

Jeremy Zoll also knocked out a multi-hit game for the Fords with two hits and one RBI.

Ursinus jumped in front in the top of the first inning generating a pair of runs off Haverford starting pitcher Kyle Waney. Single runs by the Fords in the bottom of the first and second innings, however, evened the slate for Waney.

The Bears regained the advantage with three runs in the third but Haverford rung up five runs in the fourth to gain its first lead of the game.

Liscovitz, Tentilucci, Zoll and Justin Coulter each rapped out singles in the fourth, Casey Fox brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, and Bannard's ground out with the bases loaded plated Coulter for the first run of the inning.

The most damaging inning for the Fords was the top of the sixth when Ursinus retaliated with a five-run frame to take back the lead for good. Kevin Wilson's bases-clearing 3-RBI double to center was the big blow, coming off reliever Max Gerard who had come on to relieve Waney three batters earlier.

Haverford put a runner at third base in both the seventh and eighth innings, then picked up a two-out single from Tentilucci in the bottom of the ninth but all three base runners were left stranded.

Gerard (0-1) took the loss for Haverford while reliever Steve Berardi (3-2), who had come on in relief of starter A.J. Wright with two outs in the fourth, picked up the win for the Bears.

Haverford travels to Chestertown, Md., on Saturday for a conference twinbill against host Washington College.
