Philly Inquirer tabs baseball's Bozzi for academic all-area squad

PHILADELPHIA – Haverford College senior reliever Mike Bozzi has been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer 2012 Academic All-Area Baseball team as announced Tuesday by the Philadelphia-Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).

Eligible athletes for the all-academic squad must hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher and must be in at least the second year at the nominating institution. Voting for the team is conducted by the sports information offices of the 28 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

In late May, Bozzi was named to the 2012 All-Mid-Atlantic Regional team after throwing nine innings of scoreless relief over three games in Haverford's first trip into the NCAA tournament. He earned the win in the second regional game with 6.2 innings of work (career long) in an 11-9, 12-inning victory over Drew University, stepping onto the mound with his team trailing 9-1.

The Fords earned their NCAA bid by capturing the Centennial Conference crown for the first time with Bozzi throwing the final two scoreless innings of the tournament's championship game, allowing only two hits while fanning two in Haverford's 9-1 victory.

Bozzi posted single-season career bests in ERA (1.98), runs allowed (6), strikeouts (29) and opponent's batting average (.190) over a career-high 27.1 innings during his senior season. His 51 career appearances are second-most in program history and his 26 games finished ranks third-most.

A chemistry major, Bozzi earned inclusion on the Centennial's academic honor roll in each of his three years of honor roll eligibility.
