GLASSBORO, N.J. – Alex Hudak notched four RBIs, Nick Miranda collected three hits and Tommy Bergjans hurled five innings surrendering one run in Haverford College's season-opening, 13-7, non-conference victory Tuesday afternoon over host Rowan University, handing the Profs their first loss of the season.
Haverford (1-0) jumped on Rowan (5-1) starter Ryan Easterday in the top of the third inning, sending ten batters to the plate during a six-run inning. The Fords added five runs in the top of the next inning to build an 11-0 lead before settling for a six-run advantage in the final box score.
The big inning for the Fords began when freshman catcher Nick Ott was hit by a pitch. Five consecutive singles followed, a string that was ended only when Easterday hit Hudak with the bases jammed to give Hudak the first of his four RBIs on the day.
The five-run fourth kicked off with George Hatamiya working Easterday for a lead-off walk. Three singles, an error, and another RBI-walk for Hudak along with the same for Justin Coulter nearly doubled the Fords lead in consecutive innings.
Bergjans surrendered the lone run of his five-inning stint in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Rowan's Sean Kelly. Other than that blemish, Bergjans (1-0) was on top of his game facing 19 batters and allowing just four hits and a walk while fanning seven to earn the win. Jonny Black took over at the top of the sixth and threw three innings of four-hit ball, giving up two runs before handing the ball to closer Patrick Falkoff who had his troubles in the bottom of the ninth but finally closed the door as darkness settled on the non-lighted field.
Miranda's three hits led the Fords but three others -- Ott, Casey Fox and William Bannard -- added two hits apiece. Miranda and Bannard each scored three times while Fox and Hatamiya each added two runs.
Hudak's four-RBI outing came by virtue of a pair of walks, getting hit twice, and adding a seventh-inning single to right that plated the Fords' final two runs of the game.
The persistent attack from Haverford didn't include any extra-base hits as the Fords accumulated 12 singles in out hitting the Profs, who were quiet until adding four runs in the bottom of the ninth and finishing the game with 10 hits.
Easterday (1-1) took the loss for the home team failing to last past the third batter of the fourth inning.
Haverford is scheduled to get back into action without a day off, heading to Immaculata University on Wednesday afternoon before welcoming Gwynedd-Mercy College to Kannerstein Field on Friday afternoon for the Fords' home opener.
