Record strikeout performance nets Bergjans pitcher of week award

LANCASTER, Pa. – A record-setting performance from Haverford College's Tommy Bergjans earned the sophomore right-hander the Centennial Conference's pitcher of the week award, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Bergjans set a program single-game record with Saturday's 18-strikeout, complete-game performance in Haverford's 4-2 victory over visiting Washington during the first of a twinbill against the Shoremen. He fanned the side three times, struck out two in four innings and settled for one strikeout in one inning as he registered at least one K in eight of nine frames.

Previously named the league's pitcher of the week on April 8, Saturday's victory moves Bergjans' season record to 6-0 and lowers his ERA to 1.29. Batters are hitting just .172 against him this spring and he is posting a 5.92 strikeout-to-walks ratio and 0.88 WHIP (walks-plus-hits per innings pitched).

With 149 strikeouts in less than two seasons at Haverford, Bergjans is already in the top 10 within career rankings for the Fords. His seventh-place total is chasing program leader Chaon Garland who fanned 210 batters over the 1988, 1989 and 1990 seasons.
