Pitcher of year Bergjans among 5 Fords named all-conference

LANCASTER, Pa. – Five players from Haverford College's baseball team, led by pitcher of the year Tommy Bergjans, have been voted onto the 2013 All-Centennial Conference team released Thursday by the league office. Casey Fox and Alex Hudak join Bergjans, the first Haverford hurler to be named the Centennial's pitcher of the year, with first-team honors while William Bannard and Nick Miranda were tabbed for the honorable mention team.

Bergjans led the Haverford staff with a 7-1 record and a 1.81 earned run average which was second-lowest in the conference. Over 64 and two-thirds innings on the hill the sophomore right-hander struck out 89 batters which led the Centennial and set a new single-season mark for the Fords. Bergjans' 18-strikeout performance in a complete-game victory on April 20 against visiting Washington College broke a record (15) he had set during his freshman season. In nine starts this spring he fanned at least 10 batters five times.

Fox, a sophomore third baseman, earns first-team honors for the second time and is the lone underclassman on the 2013 first unit. He led the Fords in most offensive categories including batting average, slugging percentage, hits, RBIs and extra-base hits. Fox was second on the team in runs scored and stolen bases and started all 38 games of Haverford's 2013 slate.

Hudak closes a four-year Haverford career with his initial first-team honor. The team's designated hitter started every game for the Fords and trailed only Fox in slugging percentage and RBIs. Hudak was also third on the team in hits and batting average. With a total of 112 RBIs and 153 hits over his career Hudak leaves the program third and fifth, respectively, on its all-time list.

Bannard and Miranda, both juniors, are making their first appearance on the all-conference squad.

Second on the team with a .373 batting average, Bannard also led the Fords with a .479 on-base percentage which included 19 walks. He was third on the team in runs scored and stolen bases and fourth in hits and RBIs. A middle infielder by trade, Bannard also saw time at the corner infield spots for the Fords fulfilling a true utility player's role.

Miranda led the Centennial in runs scored for the second consecutive season with a single-season program-record 50 in 2013. He also led the league in stolen bases and was second on the team in on-base percentage, hits and walks. The Fords' center fielder played in all 38 games, with 37 starts, and batted either lead-off or second in the order, setting the table for Fox and Hudak.

Of the 2013 all-conference honorees, Bergjans and Muhlenberg College's John Muha (Sr., outfield) were unanimous selections to the first team. Fox and Johns Hopkins University's Jeff Lynch (Sr., first base), the 2013 Centennial player of the year, were the lone repeaters on the first team.

Third baseman Matt Mezansky of Franklin & Marshall College was voted the league's rookie of the year and Gettysburg College's John Campo was voted the coach of the year.

Haverford, 27-11 overall and 11-7 within the conference, earned its eighth trip in nine seasons into the Centennial postseason with its appearance in the 2013 playoffs.
