Waney gem helps lead Fords past Salem State

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Starter Kyle Waney earned the win on the mound for Haverford College Tuesday afternoon as the senior right-hander shut down Salem State in a non-conference outing at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic as the Fords took a 6-3 non-conference decision from the Vikings.

Scattering six hits without a walk and fanning five over seven innings, Waney's only blemish was an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning after Haverford (3-2) had broken on top with a run in the top half of the inning.

Brett Cohen came on in relief of Waney to start the eighth and surrendered a pair of runs before Patrick Falkoff closed the door on the Vikings (2-5) by recording the final four outs of the game.

Haverford broke the early tie with a pair of runs in the top of the second behind an RBI ground-out from Nick Miranda and an RBI single from William Bannard. Nick Ott and George Hatamiya scored the Fords' runs in the inning, keyed by a sacrifice bunt by Thomas Vollaro which moved the pair into scoring position.

Casey Fox's run in the top of the fourth, on an Ott single, proved to be the winning run, though Haverford added one run in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Salem State battled for its pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth before Falkoff entered the game then shut it down.

Ott, Hatamiya, Fox and Ben Verducci each collected two hits apiece in the win.

After five games in three days to kick off the schedule Haverford will take a day off before resuming action Thursday at noon against North Park University.
