Long ball hurts Fords in losses to St. John Fisher

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Results at the plate told the story Saturday afternoon at Kannerstein Field as host Haverford College collected 11 hits in two games against 33 hits -- including five home runs -- by visiting St. John Fisher College as the Cardinals swooped in to steal a pair of wins, 13-2 and 10-4, from the home-standing Fords in non-conference baseball action.

Haverford (6-6) never led in the Game 1 loss but opened the nightcap with a pair of first-inning runs that held up until the St. John Fisher fifth.

The Cardinals (11-1) hit three home runs in the opening-game victory and added two more in the Game 2 win.

A pitcher's duel opened the afternoon as Haverford Game 1 starter Tommy Bergjans battled with Fisher's Justin D'Amato in the early innings. Both hurlers worked out of bases loaded jams while holding the other team scoreless through four innings.

Bergjans was the first to make a mistake, serving up a grand slam home run to the Cardinals' Chris Roeder in the top half of the fourth.

Haverford broke back with a run in the bottom of the inning after Nick Miranda led off with a walk against D'Amato. Two stolen bases placed Miranda at third where he came in to score on a D'Amato wild pitch.

A lead-off single from Nick Ott in the bottom of the fifth turned into Haverford's second run but nine runs by the Cardinals in the final three innings eventually pushed the visitors to the the win.

First-inning walks to William Bannard and George Hatamiya become a two-run Haverford lead at the opening of Game 2.

St. John Fisher halved the lead off Fords starter John Miraglia in the top of the third then pushed three more runs across home plate off Miraglia and reliever Anthony Rizzo in the fifth to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish in the nightcap victory.

Bergjans (2-1) took the loss in Game 1 for the Fords and Rizzo (0-2) was tagged with the Game 2 loss. D'Amato (4-0) earned the win in the opener with reliever Shawn Corrigan (4-0) picking up the nightcap victory after throwing the final 4 and 2/3 innings.

Ott finished Saturday with three hits and an RBI and scored one run for Haverford.

The Fords will regroup and try to get back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon when they travel up the Main Line to take on host Eastern University in another non-conference match-up.
