Haverford drops non-conference game to Alvernia

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team lost 15-5 to Alvernia University in non-conference action at Kannerstein Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fords (10-12) collected a pair of RBI's from catcher Sam Kane and right fielder George Hatamiya. Kane knocked in both of his runs on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hatamiya worked a walk to force in a run prior to Kane's two-RBI single in the seventh, and also plated a score with a single to left center field in the bottom of the third. Leadoff man Nick Miranda  went 2-for-5, scored two runs, and knocked in another.

The Crusaders (17-6) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after two and a half innings. Haverford stayed in the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third to close the visitors' gap to four runs. Alvernia responded by scoring five in the fifth and four in the eighth to pull away from the Fords.

Haverford threw five pitchers throughout the contest. Freshman John Masella had the longest day on the mound, as the right hander tossed 3.1 innings and surrendered six hits with just one walk. Pitchers Stephen Ridings and John Miraglia each recorded two strikeouts in the game.

Alvernia starter Ryan Sheekey pitched six innings and gave up two runs on three hits. The Crusaders catcher, Dustin Arnold, had a good day at the dish, tallying two hits and four RBI's.

The Fords' third baseman Yannick Villanueva appeared in just his fourth career game Wednesday, but provided a spark on both sides of the field. Not only did the freshman score a run and go 2-for-4 with the bat, but Villanueva made a stellar diving stop on a hard hit ball to the left side in the top of the seventh.

Haverford returns to its Centennial slate on Friday to finish its season series with Muhlenberg College. The Fords will travel to the Mules' home turf with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
